14th Annual Bruce & Cass Underwood
Well, FCF (Prattville AL) SPA contest is in the books. Norm came over early (Tuesday) to get some extra practice and to tune up his new Phoenix 8. The camper guys started assembling on Thursday with some bike riding plans over in Wetumpka to burn off some of the excitement that was building up, he he he. By Friday afternoon we had 80% of the contestants out warming up. We had a nice cooling rain from 11 AM till 2 PM that was sucked up by our sandy loam soil which allows for immediate flying after the rain. Temps had cooled into the upper 70’s and was a very pleasant for the 3 1/2 hours left of daylight. Saturday started off slowly to give the sun time to rise higher in the AM sky. We had 16 contestants with 7 from Georgia, 4 from Tennessee, 3 from Alabama and 1 each from Florida & Kentucky. The Basic class had a Fantastic turnout with 6 flyers, Thanks Guys!! The GAMA club over in GA are bringing in new folks to SPA faster than any club of the recent past. They had 6 club members make the drive over and join us for the weekend. Thanks Guys!! It takes folks participating in our SPA by traveling to keep this contest circuit alive and going, although we do understand it’s expensive to do. Without you, we would consist of a bunch of guys pecking on our phones and talking about the good ole days. Saturday came off with no weather issues and I think the day was enjoyed by all. We were able to get 5 rounds in for all classes except for Expert and Masters. Sunday also went off without a hitch. FCF gave away a stick plane Jeff Thrasher to all entrants. Jeff built 16 of the stick planes, one for everyone! Jeff also really nice airplane balancer he makes which sells for $45, so if you want his contact info, get with me. That little stick plane is a must for the pattern making it easier to understand the elements of the maneuvers we are doing. Thanks Jeff. Vic reminded us of the MASTERS is coming up Oct 10th and 11th in Johnson City TN. and they will be cooking up Boston butts Friday PM for supper that rivals any BBQ joint around. Vic needs a RSVP to have an idea how many to cook for. You can contact Vic K. at 423-557-1629. Let’s finish the year with a big turnout and enjoy the coolest temps of the year ushered in by the cool mornings amid the beautiful Tennessee Mountains. It's a wonderful and colorful time of the year to visit with the leaves turning. Again, Thanks to all for attending FCF's 14th annual Bruce and Cass Underwood Memorial Contest. Hope to see all again
