The 2024 Memphis SPA Championships, sponsored by the Memphis Prop Busters RC Club, was held on May 4-5 in Arlington, TN. Bragg Field consists of a long, wide, well manicured grass runway, covered shelters with electricity for battery charging and a very nice clubhouse.

Bobbie and I arrived at the field around 10 a.m. Friday to find all of the early arrivals busily practicing. I got in four badly needed practice/trim flights on my e-Deception, as I haven't had a chance to practice all year except at the Prattville contest.

11 pilots from five states competed this weekend - 5 from Alabama, 2 each from Mississippi & Kentucky, and 1 each from Florida & Tennessee. The weekend weather was virtually perfect for early May with high temperatures in the mid-80s and very light winds out of the south and generally right to down the runway on both days. The cloud cover varied from none to overcast with the clouds keeping the sun at bay almost all of the time on both days.

CD Terry Boston called the Pilots Meeting around 9 a.m. and the first airplane became airborne shortly thereafter. Only one flight line was used to simplify judging assignments. Four rounds were completed by 5 p.m. Saturday with a 1/2 hour break for lunch of BBQ sandwiches, cole slaw and baked beans around noon.

The two final rounds were completed before noon Sunday, and the pilots packed up while the scores were being totaled. Awards were handed out shortly thereafter and everyone was headed home by 1 p.m.

There were no crashes, but there were two scary radio incidents. Clint Higdon's Tipo acted up during his Round 2 flight, but he was able to regain enough control to get it on the ground without damage. Jerry Black experienced a similar problem during Round 4, but was also able the land safely.
