The 2021 Senior Pattern Assn. West Championships

Heart of Texas Miniature Aircraft club (HOTMAC) held the SPA West Championship contest on October the 23rd and 24th. Wayne Galligan, Max and Sally Blose, Danny and Lynn Jackson and Cliff and Gail Bradford were campers we had at the field and got there Thursday evening to do some practicing and check out the field. The HOTMAC members worked Friday to get everything ready for Saturday and Sunday and as always were there for support throughout the weekend.

Everyone started arriving around 7am Saturday morning and by 9:00 am registration and the pilots meeting was completed. Since everyone preregistered, I was able to have the flight lines and judging ready to go 1st thing. The West has been trying out a class called Unlimited that is like the old master’s class that you pick your maneuvers and keep the sequence to the correct K factors. This has worked out great and we normally fly 1st thing so the sun will be high enough that the lower classes don’t have a problem ( or as bad). We started out with 1 flight line and I had Novice setup to go last so they would not have as much of a problem with the sun. Once we started I added 2nd flight line for advanced class since we had more contestants in that class than any other classes.

We were able to switch Basic and sportsman on each line and got a total of 4 rounds in Saturday and were finished up at 5:30. We started up again Sunday morning at 10 am and completed 2 rounds and were done by 2pm and started the raffle drawings. I am very pleased with the turnout since we have had low participation this year at all other contests. We had 19 pre-registered with a total of 15 that were able to make it. We also have a new entry James Drews in Basic and for his 1st contest he did great. Alan Schreiber worked with him and he got better each round and in the end Alan beat him by 7 points, that’s how close that class was. For the raffle we had 3 kits, a Goldberg Extra 300, Tower Hobbies Kaos ARF (donated by Danny Jackson) and a T2A MK II donated by Aero Composites https://aerocompositesrc.com

In Basic we had 2 new flyers and James Drews that just started flying this year and Alan Schreiber that not only flew but worked flawlessly to help James every round and we all know that this is what this is all about.

Advanced had a great turnout with 6 competing. The top 3 guys had a close battle all day long with Ken Knotts taking 1st, Chris Berardi 2nd and Chuck Lee 3rd.

Expert had 4 competing with Todd Blose 1st, Pat Ensign 2nd and Wayne Galligan 3rd.

SR Expert had 2 with Danny Jackson 1st and great to see Cliff Bradford back flying SPA was 2nd.

I would like to send a special thanks Pat for his help and Leslie Ensign for taking care of the scoring and getting the plaques together.

A big thanks goes out to the HOTMAC club for all the support and taking care of the burgers for lunch.
