Pretty Prattville

It was a 2-part weekend in Prattville, AL September 8 & 9, that is, two weather climes. On Friday afternoon and Saturday, all one could do is perspire due to the humidity. Ice and shade was a premium, after a front moved through late Saturday afternoon, it all changed to drier air and a delightful North wind of 5 to 15 MPH. Only the hospitality of the Fountain City Flyers was eclipsed by the weather change.

Friday afternoon saw Roy Thompson and Mike Robinson in practice when their models brushed in mid-air, Roy's nice model lost about two wing sections and tip...Mike landed and no evidence was found, so all assumed Mike's prop amputated the wingtip of Roy's 40 size KAOS. Roy flew his "back=up" UGLY STIK. Larry Hill, in round one bounced his no. 1 bird on the surface, the surface won. Bruce Underwood's TT lit in a tree on the runways end. Both were recovered by Dave Phillips III,

who was probably the tallest attendee. Poor Larry's bird was heavily damaged, Bruce's was not damaged. We all hoped that Dave III would win the grand prize for his benevolence and sure enough he did. Jamie gave his Gee Bee foamie, complete, at the awards ceremony. Oh, Strong presented super glue to both Thompson and Hill and a "super-extender" pick-up tool to Bruce. The crowd gave him a tremendous ovation as the three sheepishly accepted his needed gifts.

What a thrill flying with two B-Novices, Dr. Fred Robertson and 12 year old Logan Lonsdale.. Logan flew his T-28 Park Zone electric to K 4 rounds of the six, Dr. Robertson guided his electric SEQUENCE to victory in the other two. Jamie, our SPECIAL PROJECTS and EVENT COORDINATOR conceived the B Novice concept for newbies to get a taste of SPA.

Roy Thompson and Larry Hill, both flying their "back-up" models comprised the NOVICE class, Thompson won four rounds, while Larry won two. Garry Singleton outscored three others in the Sportsman class winning 4 of the 6 rounds with Dave Phillips III winning two, Dan Dougherty and Ron Underwood pushed them. Warren Oliver showed the results of his practice since Chattanooga copping 5 of the 6 rounds while Jamie Strong flew the Blue Bullet (borrowed 40 size Birdy with a 2-stroke bomb on it) to a 2nd place in EXPERT. What a joy to see Mr. May attend for 1 day of the two, he was nice enough to pose, very much like Duane's photo which was the cover photo on the national magazine back in 2006 for the PIO's camera. The model is a replica of the one on the cover and performs equally well. After a healthy routine, diet, etc. Mr. May is the picture of good health. VP Jeff Owens, still tutoring that new thumb (repaired in Andersonville, GA emergency room) showed his expertise by K'ing 5 of the 6 rounds. He still hasn't publicly revealed the ID of that Georgia Surgeon. PIO Bruce kept the pressure on him in Senior EXPERT edging Mike Robinson and Dave Phillips (Dad).

Jamie was flanked by fellow FCF members Keven Lonsdale (Logan's Dad), Erik Gilbert, David Barnthouse, Don Priester as well as others including Jim Oliver. Bob Owens came on Friday afternoon to fellowship a bit. With a leader like Jamie, the FCF SPA contest could not have been more enjoyable. One of the members, remarked, with our field way out here, "our club should be FCF (Fabulous Country Fellowship). We totally agree.
