The SPA East Memorial Trophy
The Memorial Trophy Flyoff was created by Founder
Mickey Walker and Tom Atkins in the
mid-90s to honor the memory of the late Curtis
Motes, SPA 3. Over the years, other early member’s
names were added to the trophy following their
deaths – Dick Austin, R. E. Walker, Jim Jones, and
Ben Oliver.
The flyoff is held annually at the end of each
season Masters Contest in what is now known as the
East District. The rules for this contest are as
follows.
- The seasons two higher points scoring
eligible Senior Expert pilots attending the
Masters meet in a one flight flyoff.
- If either pilot is unable to fly any reason,
the trophy shall be awarded to the other pilot.
- The winner’s name and year will be engraved
on a small plaque and added to the trophy.
- The winner will hold the trophy for one year
and is responsible for seeing that the trophy
gets to the next Masters Contest.
- A pilot may win the Memorial Trophy only
three times and then is no longer eligible to
compete.
Below you will find the pilots who have won the
trophy.
